Indoor air quality, in the order that actually matters
Filtration is the part everyone buys first and the part that fixes the least. Here is the sequence that works, starting with the number you should be measuring.

Air quality is sold as a filtration problem because filtration is what there is a product to sell for. In Southwest Florida the complaints people actually describe — musty smell, heavy air, condensation around vents, dust that returns the day after cleaning, a house that never feels fresh — are far more often about moisture and airflow. Buy the filter first and you will usually have spent money without changing anything.
Start with relative humidity
Get a cheap hygrometer and put it in the room that bothers you, not next to the thermostat. Indoor relative humidity sitting in the forties to low fifties is where most people find a house comfortable, and where mould and dust mite populations are least happy. Consistently above the mid-fifties is where problems start, and it is worth knowing before anyone recommends equipment to you.
If the number is high while the thermostat is satisfied, the cause is almost always one of three things: the system is short-cycling and never running long enough to dehumidify, humid air is being drawn into the house faster than the system can remove it, or the equipment is oversized for the load. All three are fixable, and none of them are fixed by a filter.
Where humid air actually gets in
- Return-side duct leakage in a hot attic, which pulls unconditioned attic air straight into the system. This is the big one, and it is common.
- A house running under negative pressure — kitchen and bathroom exhaust, or a dryer, pulling more air out than is being replaced, so the make-up air comes in through every gap in the envelope.
- Ordinary infiltration around doors, windows and penetrations, which is a bigger deal here than in most climates because the air outside is carrying so much water.
Then filtration — and the trade-off nobody mentions
Filters are rated by MERV, and higher numbers capture smaller particles. The catch is that a denser filter is also harder to pull air through. Fitting a high-MERV filter into a system with a filter slot sized for a cheap one raises static pressure, reduces airflow, and makes the system worse at everything including dehumidification. Occasionally it freezes the coil.
The fix is not to accept a poor filter. It is to give a good filter enough area to breathe through — a deeper media cabinet, or more filter surface — so you get the capture without the restriction. Any competent technician can measure the static pressure across your filter and tell you whether you have room to move up.
The case that comes up every year here
A house left closed up for the summer while the owners are north. The thermostat is set high to save money, the system barely runs, humidity climbs and stays there for weeks. The cost of what grows in that house dwarfs the electricity that was saved. If a property sits empty in the wet season, controlling humidity while you are away is not an upgrade — it is the requirement, and there are controls and equipment configurations designed for exactly it.
